Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels are a medical procedure where a chemical solution is applied to the skin in order to improve its appearance.  They are a safe and effective method of:

  • targeting fine lines and wrinkles
  • improving texture and tone of the skin
  • treating areas of increased pigmentation due to sun damage or melasma caused by hormonal changes
  • improving the appearance of acne

Peels can be used individually, either to achieve a glow for a special occasion or, as a course of treatments to target specific skin issues. The result is dependent on depth of peel as well as type of peel used.

The depth of the chemical peel refers to the layer of the skin targeted.

Superficial peels exfoliate the top layer of skin known as the epidermis. Often a series of 4-6  superficial peels are required to get the optimal result.

Medium depth peels target the dermis or the medium layer of the skin. These peels result in more downtime than superficial peels with some skin peeling and redness- However 1-2 peels are usually enough to obtain the desired result.

Dr. Fiona assesses each patient prior to their peel and if necessary, she may suggest a prescribed skincare regimen to be used leading up to the procedure in order to achieve the best result possible.

Frequently asked questions

The period of downtime depends on the type and depth of peel you have. Most peels do not require any downtime – Your skin will be sensitive afterwards and you will need to avoid the sun and wear SPF 50 afterwards.

If you are considering a chemical peel, or any other facial rejuvenation treatment, please don’t hesitate to get in touch to arrange a consultation. Dr Fiona will personally address your requirements, expectations and any questions you may have, and formulate a bespoke treatment plan.

Each treatment takes approximately 30 minutes to complete but each treatment is totally bespoke to your individual needs so this may vary slightly.

Some people experience a tingling, stinging or mild burning sensation during their peel. Cold compresses are used post procedure to settle this sensation.
There’s no need for any anaesthetic so you may experience a burning sensation that lasts a short while, followed by a stinging sensation. A cool compress afterwards can help to ease
this.
