Dermal Fillers London

Dermal Fillers with Dr Fiona McCarthy

With summer now behind us, you may be starting to notice that the lines on your face seem more visible than they did before. This is often the result of both the natural ageing process – where our skin gradually loses its elasticity and levels of volume-boosting collagen as we get older – as well the overexposure to the sun over the amazing summer we have just experienced!

These lines and wrinkles can be tackled in a multitude of ways. The “one size fits all” is never the right approach. Often a combination of treatments are required to help restore that youthful glow and minimise the appearance of lines. Using an effective skincare regimen as well as injectable treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers can help restore lost volume and elasticity.

The words “dermal filler” often seems to make patients shudder in fear and this is understandable- there are far too many examples in the media of celebrities and other public figures looking overdone and overplumped by excess quantities and poor placement of filler. I always say to my patients that, if dermal filler is done well, people should never be able to tell they had it done!-The compliment that most of my patients report back to me is that friends and family tell them they look well and ask if they have been away-To me, that is the sign of a successful filler treatment and that I have done a good job!

I use the Juvederm Vycross by Allergan range in my clinic as, very simply, I feel it is the best quality filler on the market. In my opinion, the consistency of the product means the best results for my patients. This range also lasts longer than other products and also has local anaesthetic incorporated in it, ensuring comfort during the procedure.

What are dermal fillers and what are they used to treat?

Dermal fillers are a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan which occurs naturally in our skin and plays an important role in retaining moisture and volume. I often describe its role as a sponge holding lots of water in the skin. As we age, we lose our natural hyaluronic acid supplies and as a result, our skin becomes less hydrated, less plump and less firm. Dermal fillers can mimic the role of this naturally occurring hyaluronic acid, restoring volume and hydration.

The most common complaints I treat with fillers are:
  • Thin or dehydrated lips
  • Flat cheeks /Loss of volume in the cheek area
  • Tired undereyes
  • Lines from nose to mouth
  • Loss of jawline
  • Small chin
  • Hollows in the temple

It is important to emphasise that, in spite of the prevalence of dermal fillers, these treatments are not suitable for everyone. It is crucial to consult with an experienced medical professional when you are exploring your treatment options, in order to receive a thorough examination to establish your suitability, to make you aware of benefits, risks and alternatives – and for your concerns and preferences for the treatment to be addressed on an individual basis.

How long do dermal fillers last?

The longevity of dermal fillers depends on which type of filler product is used – The Juvéderm Vycross range of fillers can last from 9-18 months due to their unique composition. However, as with all medical treatments, this longevity is dependent on multiple factors individual to each patient such as smoking, sun exposure, and physical activity.

Is it painful?

To be honest, it can be a little uncomfortable during the procedure. I use numbing cream in addition to anaesthetic that is incorporated into the filler. Most patients report it as mild discomfort rather than any pain. It is a very quick procedure however and you should not experience any pain afterwards. If you do, it is important to contact your doctor immediately.
