A GUIDE TO BOTOX® WITH DR FIONA MCCARTHY

Between the bustle of the busy summer and the colder months just around the corner, there is no better time than now to tackle any skin issues or persistent lines & wrinkles that are bothering you. At my aesthetics clinic in Chelsea Bridge, I can provide you with a full skin and facial assessment to determine which treatment, or combination of treatments, will best suit your skin’s individual requirements.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT: BOTOX®

Botox® is the original, most-tested and popular brands of the powerful protein botulinum toxin available for use today.

With origins in the treatment of eye muscle disorders, Botox® is a neuromodulator, administered to temporarily weaken muscles by blocking their nerve transmission. Reducing or stopping these muscles contracting prevents existing wrinkles from deepening as well as preventing the formation of new lines in the treated area.

Although many formulations of Botulinum toxin exist, my product of choice is Botox® by Allergan as I believe it produces the best and more consistent results for my patients.

WHAT IS BOTOX® USED TO TREAT?

While Botox® is best known for treating facial wrinkles, it is also often used to treat medical conditions throughout the body, such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and teeth grinding (bruxism)-these are among the most satisfying conditions to treat as they have such a significant impact on quality of life.

The most common facial areas I treat with Botox® are:

  • ‘Number 11’ frown lines – Lines between the eyebrows
  • Forehead lines
  • ‘Crow’s feet’ -Lines at the outer corners of the eyes
  • Smoker’s lines-Lines around the mouth
  • ‘Cobblestone chin” – Dimples visible on the chin from overactivity of the mentalis muscle
  • ‘Bunny lines’ – Lines each side of the nose
  • ‘Gummy smile’- Exposure of excessive gums when smiling

Botox can also be used to:

  • Re- define the jawline and neck area with a ‘Nefertiti lift’ (platysmal bands)
    Slim the face by contouring.

WHO CAN BE TREATED WITH BOTOX?

One thing that I tell all of my patients is that it’s important to remember that although anti-wrinkle injections are very widely used, they are not always suitable for everyone. Patients concerns need to be addressed on an individual basis and a full medical history and detailed examination is necessary to assess whether you would benefit from treatment. This treatment would not recommended for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Whether you come to see me at my clinic in Chelsea Bridge or not, It is imperative that you have an initial consultation with a highly-skilled medical professional before any kind of injectable aesthetic treatment, to determine that it is the best course of treatment for you. A reputable practitioner will inform you of both the risks and benefits of the procedure as well as discussing alternative treatments and answering any questions you may have.

FAQs ABOUT BOTOX:

Does it work immediately?

No! Botox® takes anywhere from 3 days to 14 days to exert its full effect. I see all my patients 2 weeks after their initial treatment to review its effect and ensure they are happy with the results

How long does Botox last for?

On average, Botox® lasts between 3-4 months. However, there are lifestyle factors that may affect on how your treatment remains effective for. This is why a detailed initial consultation with your doctor is essential.

Does it hurt?

The needles I use to inject Botox® is very fine so many people will not experience any discomfort. At worst, people describe it as “a quick sting”. Patients can return to their busy daily schedules immediately post treatment with no downtime.
